Lymphatic Health During Pregnancy + Postpartum

What is the lymphatic system?

The lymphatic system is a network of vessels and nodes that reaches the entire body. Its role is to rid the body of toxins, maintain fluid levels, and support immunity against disease.

The pelvis contains many lymphatic structures that in a healthy system, are not even noticed. However, during pregnancy, as the uterus expands and baby grows, increased pressure on these structures can cause discomfort and swelling that is impossible to ignore.

Swollen ankles and feet are a common side effect of pregnancy, especially during late second and third trimesters. Hands and wrists can experience pain and swelling as well (leading many to say ‘goodbye’ to their wedding rings for a few months!)

What are the benefits of lymphatic drainage for pregnancy and postpartum?

Lymphatic drainage is a safe, comfortable, and relaxing treatment with many benefits including:

  • swelling reduction

  • reduced pain due to pregnancy induced carpal tunnel

  • reduce engorgement/discomfort and decreased mastitis risk when breastfeeding

  • improve energy and reduce feelings of brain fog

  • increase energy

  • support healing after c-section

What does a session look like?

Sessions are completed in the comfort of your home! This works especially well for postpartum moms so that they can remain close to baby and be seen shortly after birth for maximum breastfeeding benefits (see more on this in my Breastfeeding + Lymphatic Drainage post!) A massage table is brought into the home and a pregnancy pillow is provided for comfort in side-lying while pregnant. If a massage table does not feel comfortable to you, no problem: the treatment can be completed in bed or nursery glider.
