So What IS Lymphatic Drainage?
Let’s start with talking about the lymphatic system itself. This complex network of vessels and nodes runs throughout the entire body. Its role is to rid the body of toxins, maintain fluid levels, and support immunity against disease.
Lymph nodes are what I like to call the “powerhouse” of the lymphatic system. These little bean shaped organs filter the fluid of the lymphatic system. Not only that, they also de-code the fluid and create white blood cells (also called Tcells or lymphocytes) to go off and fight disease and infection. This is why proper care of the lymphatic system is SO important. There are certain areas in the body where lymph nodes are most prominent including armpits, groin, back of knees, neck, and the deep core.
Running between the lymph nodes are the vessels that carry the fluid throughout the body. After the fluid has been collected from the superficial tissue and filtered through the lymph nodes, it’s reintroduced back into the bloodstream via the thoracic duct located near the heart. From here, waste product is filtered through the kidneys and liver and exits the body via waste (that’s why people report needing to pee after lymphatic drainage and feeling lighter - bye bye water weight!) The healthy fluid remains in the system as part of blood volume.
Now that you have some understanding of the anatomy, let’s talk about lymphatic drainage. This specific technique promotes clearing of the nodes, and mobilization of fluid towards those nodes to be processed deeper in the system. Because the vessels are so superficial, lymphatic drainage is completed without lotions or oils to allow a gentle pull of the skin which opens up the initial collectors of the system. Sessions can address the entire body, or focus on specific needs:
Digestive issues? More work on the abdomen and breathing
Recently have a long travel day? More work on the legs where fluid pools when sitting for prolonged periods of time
Brain fog and/or anxiety? More work on scalp, face, and neck along with breathing
Intense PMS symptoms and/or bloating? More pelvic and abdominal work
Recently have a cosmetic surgery? More work around (never on!) incisions to help move stagnant fluid, speeding up healing and maximizing results
I start sessions with a head and neck series as well as guided deep breathing, followed by abdominal work (if safe and appropriate), then the remainder of the session focused on problem area(s). Some sessions are entirely face up on the table, while others may require laying face down for some posterior work. Every session is catered to what you need that day and is adjusted on the go as I learn more about your body’s needs (where I feel stagnant fluid, etc.)
No matter the need, lymphatic work is an excellent wellness tool to add to your routine whether it’s for a specific reason or just to feel like your best self and boost that immune system!
